Eldar Ryazanov and Emil Braginsky co-wrote several screenplays. Moreover, these films have become popular not only in our country, but also abroad. And their first joint work was the lyrical comedy "Beware of the Car". At the beginning of the sixties, Ryazanov shot the film "The Hussar Ballad", and the young director was not offered new scripts for some time. Then he himself decided to take up the pen. At the Mosfilm film studio, he met the screenwriter Emil Braginsky, with whom they began work.
As a basis for the script, they took the legend of a noble car thief who sold transport to those who lived far from earning money. At the same time, he left almost nothing for himself, and transferred the money to orphanages. True, in the USSR, no one could say exactly where this "Robin Hood of the XX century" operated. Several cities were named - Moscow, Leningrad, Odessa, Rostov-on-Don. The scriptwriters even turned to the police for help, where they were convinced that this the story is pure fiction.
Nevertheless, work on the script progressed very quickly, after two months it was ready. Initially, it was assumed that Yuri Nikulin would play the main role in the film, but by the beginning of filming, he left with the circus on a long tour. As a result, the choice fell on Innokenty Smoktunovsky, who was approved for the role not without problems. The thing is that the actor recently played the role of Lenin, how could he appear before the audience in the guise of a criminal, albeit a noble one?
But, everything ended well, Smoktunovsky was allowed to act in the role of Yuri Detochkin. To do this, Innokenty Mikhailovich even had to get a driver's license. He liked driving the Volga car on the set so much that he bought a car of this particular brand for himself. True, in Ryazanov's comedy, complex stunts were performed not by Smoktunovsky himself, but by a professional stuntman Alexander Mikulin.
The GAZ-21 car, which was stolen by the protagonist of the film "Beware of the Car", has now taken its place of honor in the Mosfilm Museum. The car can be safely called a veteran of Soviet cinema. Viewers could also see her in such films as "Three Poplars on Plyushchikha", "The Diamond Arm", "Poisons, or the World History of Poisoning".
Olga Aroseva, who played the role of Lyuda, Detochkin's bride, also took courses for trolleybus drivers. the actress even completed an internship, driving a trolleybus on a real route. The passengers did not even know that a famous actress was driving.
The working title of the film during filming was different - "Hijacked the car". There was even a fear that the tape could end up "on the shelf" for many years; not all the officials from the cinema liked the fact that Yuri Detochkin made the decision to independently punish the Soviet "shadow workers". It would be much better to simply report to the relevant authorities that such and such a citizen has unaccounted income. But in 1964, the screenplay was published in the magazine "Young Guard", receiving positive reviews. The painting was given the green light.
The shooting took place in various districts of Moscow. In the frames of the film, you can see, for example, Sretenka Street, where Dima Semitsvetov worked in a thrift store. And in a trap, Yuri Detochkin, trying to steal a car, falls on the Smolenskaya embankment. Despite the fact that in the first minutes of the film, a voice-over announces that it is not known where this story took place, it is easy to guess that the events of the comedy detective unfold in Moscow.
The main shooting took place in 1965, and in July of the following year, the film was released. Despite the summer season, when many townspeople prefer to leave for the fresh air, the success of the painting was incredible. In 1966, it was watched by 29 million viewers. The comedy "Beware of the Car" has been featured at film festivals in Scotland and Australia. And Innokenty Smoktunovsky, who perfectly played the role of Yuri Detochkin, became the best actor of the USSR in 1966 according to polls by the magazine "Soviet Screen".
Director Eldar Ryazanov was a native of the city of Kuibyshev (now Samara). It was here that he was born on November 18, 1927. In 2012, residents of Samara prepared an original gift for their famous countryman for the 85th anniversary. A monument to Yuri Detochkin was erected in the city.
It is not known whether the film "Beware of the Car" gained fame in Malaysia, but the successors of the case of Yuri Detochkin were found in this country. Several years ago, the police put two brothers on the wanted list, who stole more than two dozen cars. Like the hero of the film, Eldar Ryazanov, they did not spend the proceeds on themselves, but transferred them to charitable foundations and orphanages. The hijackers also chose reputable cars, therefore, their total cost exceeded a million US dollars.
