The report found that the majority of Australians – around six in 10 – are living with chronic conditions. This is expected to increase, as aging Australians are likely to have more than one chronic condition.
Chronic diseases contributed to about 90% of deaths in the nation in the years between 2002 and 2022.
For example, chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer were common causes of death among people over 45, and dementia was the most common cause of death among people over 85.
Commenting on the report, the Australian Medical Association (AMA) highlighted the link between chronic diseases and mental health.
He says conditions such as chronic arthritis, diabetes, hypertension and dementia are closely linked to community mental health, and healthcare workers are also at risk.
“…it’s probably not surprising that we have a community where mental health is so important, where people are in emotional distress, people are under pressure, and that’s not just a burden of compassion but it’s also an economic burden.” , the president of the AMA, Professor Steve Robson. he said.
“So, we need to make sure we address these things because they are so important to the overall economy of the country. They are not just a compassionate issue.”
